I'm not a fan of "mean girl" stories and tend to avoid them as much as possible. Also not a fan of filler scenes involving sex and drinking. What's the point? Thanks for the review; I'll be staying away.Ayleehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07639250102446794830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11403564.post-51191887430479223462012-02-05T13:53:46.459-05:002012-02-05T13:53:46.459-05:00I'm sorry you didn't like it! From a retel...I'm sorry you didn't like it! From a retelling angle, I liked it a lot. I love Rebecca, and I think Paige Harbison did some interesting things with the way she adapted the story. If I didn't have the original to compare it to, then I don't think I would have liked it half as much. The original characters are awful people, too. I did strongly dislike the rampant sex/drinking though.Small Reviewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16072352095510905410noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11403564.post-78184138393597473912012-02-02T22:48:14.124-05:002012-02-02T22:48:14.124-05:00I'm sorry to hear you didn't like this boo...I'm sorry to hear you didn't like this book though I understand where you're coming from, since this book has a 50/50 chance of liking it. I, on the other hand, thought it was such a great read and despite hating all of the characters I ended up loving them for all the hate. Odd I know. Like you though, I wasn't aware it was a retelling of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca until I finished the book . . . both stories definitely share things in common. Anyway, great review!Erin W.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12057902364536764649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11403564.post-44324669066303711972012-02-02T19:51:42.464-05:002012-02-02T19:51:42.464-05:00Too bad this wasn't so great because it sounds...Too bad this wasn't so great because it sounds like it would be interesting. I hate when that happens! I read her first book, Here Lies Bridget, and I didn't really like it. She sounds like a hot mess, and that's sad for her because it's like she never even had a chance. The fact that her identity/name was not revealed until the end gave her no identity in the book. Well, that's what it sounds like anyway. And I'll be the first to admit that yes, I can still develope an addicted to a story even if I don't like the protagonist *cough*MacKayla Lane*cough* but this story doesn't sound like one for me.Missie, The Unread Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10548256640926555361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11403564.post-44572951080352106672012-02-02T15:00:58.350-05:002012-02-02T15:00:58.350-05:00Definitely not for me. I'm really sorry you didn't like this book either, Z! :( I've heard some reviews saying the same thing: that Becca was awful and that the love triangle was uncalled for. But I had no idea that it was based on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca either! Like you, I haven't read it but my aunt thought it was pretty great! She's still trying to get me to pick it up haha. x)

Thank you so much for the amazing honest review, Z! I'm still really intrigued to know what the New Girl's name is, though! The sheer volume of alcohol and sex in this one just rubbed me the wrong way, I just wanted to get away from it a bit and have more time with the characters. By the time Becca's mom entered in the picture at the end, it was too late for me to feel any sympathy for her either. Just not the book for me! I have trouble with a lot of YA retellings anyway. From all the reviews that I've read it's either a love it or hate it read. I've yet to read a review that loved the original novel and the update as well. Because I'm morbidly curious, I'll read this one but maybe with a different lens since I already knows what happens in the plot.Rummanah Aasihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12119402559076729383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11403564.post-22010327662482480042012-02-02T09:14:31.223-05:002012-02-02T09:14:31.223-05:001.5!? I've seen this on NetGalley and somehow, I got the feeling that it wouldn't be that good so I didn't request it. *Phew*Chelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09113611207753873326noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11403564.post-70912172937795275902012-02-02T01:02:51.935-05:002012-02-02T01:02:51.935-05:00It seems like a lot of the reviews of this one are...It seems like a lot of the reviews of this one are lukewarm at best, so I don't think I'm going to be picking it up anytime soon. A pity that the execution of this one is so poor - I think the premise of a YA retelling of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is a good one! I've seen the movie Rebecca (and I'm not sure, but I think perhaps I read the book years ago?), and while I think it could lend itself to some of the problems you discussed when translating it into a YA setting, it sounds like the Gothic atmosphere that gives the original its charm is lost in this one :(danyahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07947267082874389487noreply@blogger.com
