Review: The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston

From Goodreads: She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky ... But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last. Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules - and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself. But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters - survival.

My Rating: 3 hearts

Thoughts on the Novel: The Rules for Disappearing by Ashley Elston is a breezy read if you’re not thinking too hard about how farfetched the plot is. Unfortunately, I found that the book started to lose steam one Meg discovered why she was in the Witness Protection Program.

Meg herself was someone I had a few problems with. Although I liked how much she cared about her younger sibling, I thought she complained a bit too much about her situation and didn’t treat her parents very nicely. I also thought Meg wasn’t exactly the brightest character; and when coupled with the plot’s predictability, I was left disappointed by the mystery in The Rules for Disappearing.

The romance was another thing I had an issue with. Sure, Ethan was sweet, but I found it unbelievable that he would risk his safety for someone he had only known for a few days!

Even though I ended up thinking The Rules for Disappearing was an okay read, the ending suggested that there will be a sequel. If there is, I’ll probably pass.

The Rules for Disappearing will be released by Disney Hyperion tomorrow!

Comments About the Cover: I don’t really like it. It’s kind of boring looking and has me wondering why the girl isn’t wearing any shoes.

In exchange for an honest review, this book was received from the publisher (Disney Book Group) for free via NetGalley.

ETA: A look at Goodreads has confirmed that there will be a sequel to The Rules for Disappearing.

  1. Aww, sorry you didn't really enjoy this. From reading your review I don't think it would be my cup of tea either. I like it when the mc has a strong relationship with her/his sibling, but I can't stand it when they whine a lot. Thanks for the honest review!

  2. Lol, on the feet comment. I was wondering why she isn't wearing shoes either. I have this ARC to read but now I know what to expect from it. Thanks for your honest review, Z!

  3. The romance does sound quite unrealistic. Very few people would risk everything for someone they had just met. I'm glad you still thought this was an okay read overall, though. Personally, I'm not in a hurry to read it. Lovely review, Z!

  4. The problem you found with the romance I feel would be a problem for me too. I don't mind a little far fetched at times but this sounds a little over the top even for me. Lovely review Z :)

  5. Meh, I'll pass on this one based on what you had to say. Unbelievability is one of my biggest pet peeves in plots. I just become so fixated on it and I can't let it go, so I think I would have a big problem with that and it would severely affect my enjoyment of the story. So yup, pass. Thanks for the honesty!

  7. Awwww sorry this one didn't really work for you Z! I loved it, but I agree it was definitely far fetched. I just sort of glossed over that fact and went with it though. I was in the mood for a book like this I think:) Hope your next read is AWESOME!

  8. I really appreciate honest reviews, but I'm sad to hear that you couldn't enjoy this read as much as you'd wanted to. I think I might pass on this one then, as my TBR pile is huge already!

  9. I think you've hit the nail on the head with all the issues I had with this one. It was *okay*, but not at all great. I definitely won't be picking up the sequel, either.

  10. We pretty much had the same problems with this one. The second part was too far fetched and I didn't appreciate the romance either. Overall, it was an entertaining read, but there was nothing really memorable about it.
    Great review.

  11. I felt the exact same way about this one. Farfetched is the perfect description for it. And yes Meg was so oblivious to what I found was super obvious. I did like the romance but I agree it was a lil quick for Ethan to do so much for her.

  12. Yeah, I'm not a fan of these kind of stories (to read!), but it sounds interesting. I only would try it if it was translated into Dutch and in the library. The romance does sounds a bit off. Why risk your life for a girl you just know a few days??? Weird... Great review!

  13. Aw, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy this. I really liked it, and I didn't have any of the problems you mentioned! It seems as though a number of other bloggers had issues with it too, though. I shall read the sequel for all of us. :D
